THE SURF

With the help of some of the surf groups, we have personally named the waves for identification purposes and some of these names have come about through experiences the group have encountered while surfing the waves. The waves classification will start from the most northern tip of the Monties island and will descend south to the furtherest wave that we have found to-date. While l say that, we are still finding other waves when groups give me the opportunity to explore. This has become more difficult over the past 2 years as we have been able to predict the conditions of each wave prior to getting there insuring they are getting maximum wave time in the water. Not withstanding we hope to be able to finalise all of the waves within the next 2 seasons. At this point we have a total 15 waves that are of a similar standard on your side that l have surfed, being "Snapper rocks", Burleigh Heads, "Lennox Head", Byron Bay (the pass) and numerous other waves south of Sydney.

North Passage
(Still un-named to date): A right hand point break, which requires a large swell to work. Best surf times are late and early in the seasons due to more westerly swells reaching in and around the top of the island. Wave length is approx 400 metres. Loves a cyclone swell and works on all tides, however the top and bottom of the tides and neap tides are the best due to currents. This wave can be surfed at all levels including Mal riders. A class wave.

Shapers Bay
Right hand outer reef break. Surfed for the first time this year. Fast right hander peels off on live coral for 300 metres. Doesn't need a lot of swell to work. Difficult to get into with large vessel and surfers are transported by tender to break. Wave suited toward intermediate skills onwards. Named by Glenn Kennedy from Kennedy Surfboards in Malibu on request because "shapers" never get a mention.

Murphy's Left
Left hand outer reef break. Popular wave for intermediate surfers onwards. Does get more dangerous to surf on low tides however high level surfers still get into it. Hollow wave with large face. Length of wave 150 metres and some times up to 200 metres pending swell direction and tide. Best conditions on low swell days as this wave traps swell heading north. Great diving & fishing spot while on anchor.

Zorro's
Right hand quality wave. All groups love this wave due to its quality. Pro surfers have claimed it to be similar to HT's. Excellent take off with hollow right hand tube ride. This wave is an A plus with similar conditions as HT's having a Magic Hour. All groups ask me to take them back there during the tour. Vessel has excellent position on edge of break with back deck looking into the wave face (Lounge Chair View). Not for the beginner surfer. Wave length 120 metres tube ride. Great fishing while on anchor. Name came about by Flea from Rusty. Spent all day in the tube standing like Zorro and on returning to overnight anchorage at sunset there was a cloud strip exactly like Zorros sword strip so we named it Zorros. A+ wave.

Butt-her-face
Left hand point break. Features in video and is similar type wave to Margaret's but smaller. Intermediate surfers on-wards for this break. Does have the wave shoulder pulling around onto the reef and you can get caught inside if your not careful. Great wave to challenge you. Has exceptional days like all waves, however, l do find the best part of the wave at take off to be a little bumpy. Hence the name! B+ on its day, however normally would give it a C+.

Dough's Corner
Right hand outer reef break. This wave has 2 take offs inner and an outer. Will both line up on bigger swells and the wave enjoys any size swell. Named came from a Wet liner who run aground there some years back. Towed the vessel off the reef and limped back to Onslow. (Old time fisherman). Surfed this wave at it's best this year and all the group gave it a big rap. Excellent Queen fish caught on popas here, great fun for the guys on the way home from a big day. Great free dive location as well with great coral trout. A for quality, however it doesn't line up properly for each trip.

Platforms Inners
Haven't got a real name for these 2 breaks yet so will settle for this at present. These 2 reef breaks are closer to the islands and have more protection than the outer reefs and atolls. Waves are very similar to Shipwrecks on the islands off Bali. Haven't spent a lot of time in there on bigger days due to other waves that have been a preferred destination. Set up looks great for the guys who don't want to charge 10ft outer reef waves and a must for me to sort out next year. Great fishing and diving here on low swell days. Awesome live coral and prize fish. Spear gun divers delight.

Platforms Left
This left hand wave is a must surf when it is on. Has to be one of the best waves in the world l have surfed. Wave rolls around this atoll for over 1500 meters. Take off out the back is big time 15 foot plus. Loves any swell you can give it. Cuts across the front corner off the atoll and raps all the way down this atoll coral reef, which swings around causing the wave to almost rap 220 degrees. Take off areas are approx 4 spots so all levels of surfers can get into this wave. Loves a low tide, wave reminds me of Jakes at Kalbarri however this wave is 8 times longer. Waves magazine did some filming there a couple of years ago and apart from that l have kept it under cover. A++ wave with everything from Tow-in on Jet Ski to 5 second tube rides through parts of the wave. Great fishing here with chinamen cod most popular approx 15 kilo fish. A must for the surf taxi (dingy) to get back out the back.

Platform Right

First surfed at the beginning of last year. Long right hand wave approx 400 metres long. Breaks over coral and works on all tides. A little bit like Winki Pop with perfect flawless wave faces down the line. Surfed it last trip solid 8 ft. Must use big board 7'2" to make it. This wave has a second wave down in the bay, which is a peak take off. Some guys are happy to surf this rather than the more challenging wave out the back. This location loves swell and gets plenty of it. Has become a popular place for us over the past 2 seasons. Guys love it. Great fishing, diving and spear fishing here on the fingers of the reef. Wave class was raised this year from a B+ to an A after some epic long right hand tube rides by the guys. Glenn Kennedy from Kennedy Surfboards said the outer take off and down the line ride reminded him.

Wank! Wank! Spurt
This wave was just found at the beginning of this year. What can l say! The guys are raving about it. Big left hander breaks out the back and reforms on the inside corner of the reef cleaning up on the reef. Take-off is at your level of skill with very hollow first section, still make able as a natural if you don't commit too deep. Wave levels out with long shoulders to let you carve all over the faces. This wave travels for over 700 meters and at the end it pits out again for the final spurt. Hence we named it as above. Great place to get your turns down pat with 2 options for a tube ride. Good fishing here while on anchor. Lounge chair view of the wave from the boat. A must for the dingy to get back out the back. After surfing this wave heaps this winter we have finally got the tide worked out and all groups gave it the big thumbs up.

Right hander of Wank! Wank! Spurt
This wave is similar to the right hander at Margaret's (South Sides) but longer. Great for the mal riders of all levels with some great rides to be had. Doesn't like too much swell and likes light winds.

Tee Trees

Left hand point break at the top of another island. Loves swell and will take anything that comes up. We surfed this wave a lot late this season when the big swells arrived as most groups couldn't see themselves pulling into 12 ft + piping lefts that relentlessly peel off for 1000 meters like G-Land. Tee Trees is a must stop for all groups including Mal riders and big charges. Wave is very similar to Maccas in the Mentawais group and similar length may be a bit longer than Maccas.

Surfers Point
Great wave for all levels however the hard cores would be wanting me to go to the more challenging spots. It is great to have these waves available so as we can provide waves for all levels of surfers. This wave peels off on a sand bar, which is great for the learner group, but is set up perfectly in the way it peels off similar to Byron Bay.

Bigada
Right hand surf break. Wave class B+. l don't usually get down the island this far as l have not needed to. This wave will get any swell and is a great sucky right hander similar position to Gas Bay at Margaret's.

Booee
The Americans on the boat named this wave as a large Buoy is in the middle of the bay. They pronounce the buoy as booee so l named it that. The wave is an extremely testing left hander that doesn't like too much swell. Very committing wave with an awesome tube ride for the charges. A+ however would not even go there with the average groups.

Barrow Island

What can l say. l think the photos & video tells the story. This wave is awesome. All the pros want me to take them there when it is on and l have seen it at 15 ft. Would have to say the best kept secret in the surfing fraternity for a long time. It's out now and was the main reason for me buying a boat and coming up to these island. The wave is 1 nautical mile long exactly on my GPS. The wave l have tried to divide up into 3 sections. Personally the outer take off at the start of the wave is the most prominent spot with the wave consistently breaking in the same spot with each wave. No shifting peaks. The only thing is it breaks further out as it increases in size. Can be surfed from 3ft to what ever. This wave peels off down the top end of Barrow Island and is able to do this due to the way the island leans off. The wave is allowed to take its natural swell direction and just run up the reef on its way north hence it is just an amazing set up. Every group that has been on the boat have surfed Barrow at some level and have all loved it so l guess it will become in time the main talk when people are choosing to come on these tours. l personally love the wave at 4 to 6ft not being 18years of age anymore! The middle section is the part in the video where D Hobgood and others were filmed from the water. Still a good spot however can be a little quick if you are not into it early. The end bit breaks into a little bay and is usually 1/3 the size of out the back. Great wave on its own and have found some groups splitting up and surfing down there. So, they're a bit for everyone here. Great fishing spot with Spangled emperor & Chinamen Cod top fish on this location 8 kilo approx.

Muiron islands
This wave is the first wave we surf once everyone is on the boat. It is approx 11/2 hours from Port of Exmouth and loves any swell. lt is one of those waves you must surf during your life time. Any one can ride it and it has heaps to offer every one. Great Mal wave too. It peels around between the islands for over 220 degrees. Great fun! Not too intense out the back A+ for quality and uniqueness.
