SURFBOARD
FEES AND EXCESS BAGGAGE EMBARGOS:
READ BEFORE YOU BOOK. DONT GET BURNED!
NOTE: Surfboard fees are subject
to airline discretion and may change at any time. Airlines
may charge at times per board as opposed to per bag, especially
if you are carrying 3 or more boards.
They may also charge you extra for longboards, or boardbags
over 9ft or 70lbs, as well as for hard cases. Wavehunters
does not assume responsibility for airline board fees or baggage
policies. Please be advised that this is a variable at times
and airlines are not always consistent about how much they
charge or when they charge. Bring extra money or a credit
card in case you are charged excessive board fees. Airlines
are clamping down more and more on excess baggage. Some airlines,
most notably, CONTINENTAL, DELTA, AND UNITED
have EXCESS BAGGAGE EMBARGOS meaning they DO NOT
ALLOW SURFBOARDS or any excess baggage during select times
of the year to select cities.
PLEASE USE THE INFORMATION BELOW AS A GUIDELINE AS YOU

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
EMBARGOS: ALL YEAR (NO SURFBOARDS ACCEPTED):
CONTINENTAL AIRLINES: Lima, Peru; San Salvador, El Salvador
**
** This embargo is year-round. No exceptions. Absolutely do
not fly Continental to these cities.
EMBARGOS: HOLIDAY (NOV 15-JAN 15) AND SUMMER (JUNE-AUGUST)
Many airlines have holiday embargos and summer embargos, including
DELTA, UNITED, and CONTINENTAL. During this time period no
excess baggage including surfboards is accepted to most destinations
in Mexico, Central and South America. You can check the following
websites for updates:
CONTINENTAL: http://www.continental.com/dash/build_dash.asp?service_02_08
DELTA: http://www.delta.com/travel/trav_serv/bag_info/carry_on/index.jsp

UPDATE
** UNITED, CONTINENTAL and DELTA will be heavily enforcing
excess baggage embargos (which includes surfboards) during
the period of Nov 15, 2002 - Jan 15, 2003. This includes the
following Wavehunters destinations: San Jose, Costa Rica;
San Salvador, El Salvador; Lima, Peru; Panama City, Panama;
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Zihuatenejo, Mexico; Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, Santiago, Chile, as well as Brazil and nearly all
cities in Mexico, Central and South America. It is advised
you book alternative airlines. Contact Wavehunters for reservations
on SURF-FRIENDLY airlines. These include: AMERICAN, AEROMEXICO,
MEXICANA, AERO CALIFORNIA, LACSA, TACA, COPA, AMERICA WEST,
LAN CHILE AND VARIG.
The following chart shows airlines in bold that are SURFER-FRIENDLY,
meaning airlines that generally charge less than $50 each
way and which generally charge per boardbag as opposed to
per board. All prices are subject to change, and all baggage
issues are ultimately deferred to the gate agents at the airlines
counters. Note, United, Continental and Iberian have
acquired a nasty reputation for opening up board bags and
charging PER BOARD, as opposed to per bag. In general, most
other carriers are tolerant of board bags with multiple boards
totalling 3 or less if the overall weight of the bag is under
40lbs and its length is under 9ft.
